5G in Greece: The hypothetical list of smartphones that support the new networks in our country

After a long time of negotiations, discussions, settlements, radio frequency auction and other procedures, the providers are now ready to provide access to the new generation of wireless networks in Greece.

ΤWe will see the full potential of 5G networks through the applications that will be presented in the coming years in areas such as telemedicine, autonomous driving and others, which will be disrupted, ie they will change rapidly.

A first case where we can see the practical benefits, of course, is the much higher speeds of the new generation network, which reach - in the worst case - 5 times higher than the maximum 4G speed. If we compare the average 4G speed with the maximum 5G, then we have many times higher number.

So how can one access 5G speeds? There are two factors: network coverage and compatible device. At the moment, COSMOTE and WIND have already opened their 5G "doors", with Vodafone following in January. WIND covers areas in Athens and Thessaloniki, with coverage reaching 60% within the next three years, as stated in their announcement. COSMOTE also covers Athens and Thessaloniki, but also other cities, while they state that the coverage will reach 50% by the end of 2021.

The second part, which concerns the devices, requires a certified mobile phone from the respective company. In short, every provider has gone through a process of certifying mobile compatibility with their network to make sure it works properly. Therefore, each company has a list of certified devices.

The list of devices will be constantly growing, as more mobile phones are certified, while manufacturers will gradually introduce more and more phones with 5G capabilities, even in cheaper categories.

The combined list of compatible devices with the Greek 5G networks:
  • Apple iPhone 12mini (COSMOTE / WIND coming soon)
  • Apple iPhone 12 (COSMOTE / WIND coming soon)
  • Apple iPhone 12 Pro (COSMOTE / WIND coming soon)
  • Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max (COSMOTE / WIND coming soon)
  • Huawei P40 Pro (WIND)
  • Huawei P40 (WIND)
  • Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra (COSMOTE / WIND coming soon)
  • Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro (COSMOTE / WIND)
  • Xiaomi Mi 10T (COSMOTE / WIND)
  • Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite (COSMOTE / WIND)
  • Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro (COSMOTE / WIND)
  • Xiaomi Mi 10 (COSMOTE / WIND)

It is worth noting that the devices that have been certified are the models imported by the official representatives of the manufacturers. There is a possibility that the same model, if it comes from a misstatement, will not work with the network of providers in Greece.

Note : The issue with compatible devices listed by companies is purely a marketing ploy to promote the devices they have in their stores.

Devices are always required to follow the specifications of each network to be able to connect and use the network, not the other way around. As soon as any device that circulates in the international trade and not only in our country, meets the specifications of the network (frequencies - bands - type of signal modulation), it will be able to connect, regardless of whether it is included in the lists of network providers or not.

No provider has the right to adjust according to its own wishes and interests, the use of the network by third party devices that meet 100% of the technical requirements.

So, regardless of whether you do not see your device in the above posted lists, and it is 100% compatible with the providers' network specifications, it should be connected properly.

That is, if a tourist comes to our country who has a device that is 100% compatible with the specifications of the network in our country, he will not be able to connect because his device does not exist in the above list? Of course not θα .. it will be able to connect normally.
