Ο wizard describes how to unlock the xiaomi device bootloader on linux, and is a creation of the moderator in our forum fog (Peace)!
EVERYBODY backup in whatever interests us, because not only will it happen factory reset with the unlock, but with the specific tool, no confirmation will be asked, once the unlock command is given.
ATTENTION: use the guide at your own risk.
- The procedure was applied to Redmi note 5 (why red).
- The linux distribution is Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and the commands / package names apply to ubuntu. Any distribution can be used, as long as the package names you use are those of your distribution.
- The unlock tool used was created with reverse engineering of the corresponding unlock tool by xiaomi, by franztesca, its creator xiaomitool.
- The program can also run in a graphical environment but the command line procedure was preferred.

Computer preparation:
1. Installation of the necessary packages for the communication of the mobile with the computer in fastboot mode:
sudo apt install android-tools-adb android-tools-fastboot
2. Installing java. If you already have a version installed, try it.
(Oracle-java 8 was used in this process).
3. Usb 2 port. (In my case I only had 3 usb ports and I tried to connect a USB hub on one of them, connecting the device to it and it worked normally).
Mobile phone preparation:
It is exactly the same process we do for unlocking in windows:
Need mi account, display of developer options, activation of the switch “OEM unlocking”And connecting our device to the mi account.
Enable standby countdown:
1. Download the tool from here and decompress it.
2. Put your device on fastboot mode and connect it to the computer.
3. Open your terminal in the path of the MiUnlockTool folder.
4. Check if the device is visible from the computer by giving the following command to the terminal:
fastboot devices
5. You need the username and password of your mi account for the next command, as well as the user password, since you need permissions root:
sudo ./MiUnlockTool.sh username password
If at the output of the terminal, after a while, you see the following error at the end, the countdown has started.
Unfortunately the hours are not shown, so you will calculate the date, based on the usual waiting time for your device.
Unlock the device:
1. Repeat the above procedure, when the waiting time has elapsed, having NECESSARILY backup, since it will be done restore factory settings on the device, WITHOUT any other warning or confirmation from you.
(The command worked the second time, as it got my first timeout error at the end).
NOTE: if you have the ability to use windows for the process, it is better / safer to prefer them.

There is a way to open / close the bootloader without doing a factory reset.
