Xiaomi: Patents a Modular Smartphone

A new patent shows that Xiaomi is thinking of building her first Modular Smartphone.

ΤLast February 2020, the Xiaomi Mobile Software Co. filed another patent, this time at United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for a new "electronic device».

The same device, from April 29 2021 was also included in its database World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), to protect this new patented technology.

In the documentation submitted by Xiaomi in WIPO, describes in detail a new smartphone consisting of several modules (modules) - three to be exact - with different functions each.

Today the Dutch graphic designer Jermaine Smit, also known as Concept Creator , created a set of 3D renderings on his account LetsGoDigital, which are based on the patent filed by Xiaomi, but also its own third variant of the device.

The Xiaomi Modular Smartphone consists of three different sections (modules).

The first unit you see above, will contain the motherboard and the camera system, in the second unit (in the middle of the device) we will have the battery, while there will also be a third unit, which will be the bottom of the phone .

These units can be changed very easily to provide some additional features and different Hardware.

For example, you can add an extra speaker unit or a different Camera Module that has a larger zoom with a second screen on the back of the device.

All these modules will be fastened behind the large frame of the screen through a special system of rails that can slide together. Once all the units are properly connected and fastened, the device can be switched on.

The housing can be made of metal or plastic, and the documentation submitted by the company describes two different types of camera units. In the first case we see a vertical camera system, which consists of a quad-camera device with the flash positioned to the right.

The fourth camera on the bottom seems to be a percussion lens that will offer better zoom capabilities.

In the second case we are dealing with a square array of cameras consisting of three sensors together with Flash, with a design that is similar to the one we have seen in Redmi 9C.

That inspired him Jermaine to design a third module that will be equipped with a triple camera and an additional small screen, with a similar design to the one we saw in My 11 Ultra recently released.

Modular smartphone with Selfie camera below the screen

Of course, this modular Xiaomi Smartphone will not only have rear cameras. An additional Selfie camera will be on the front of the device, however, it is not clear from the documentation that has been submitted, what kind of camera it will be.

Because in the sketches submitted by the company we do not see any reference to holes or notch, we assume that the Selfie camera will be located below the screen (UDC Selfie camera), and maybe Xiaomi will announce this year its first smartphone with a camera under the screen.

The biggest advantage of smartphone modules is that their owners will be able to relatively easily replace the Modules of the device, with others that will have more specialized functions and better features.

This will also benefit the planet from an ecological point of view, because if there are no unnecessary parts that need to be replaced, e-waste will be reduced.

If Xiaomi finally decides to release this modular phone, of course we will also expect to find an extremely fast charger in 120 watts, in its packaging.

This is not the first time Xiaomi has considered launching a modular device. In 2013 the Lei Jun, co-founder and CEO of Xiaomi, posted on the Chinese Weibo forum, many photos of a modular Smartphone with the name Magic Cube.

Although this device was never released, it now appears that Xiaomi is still experimenting with the idea of developing a modular smartphones, and we may see it released sometime in the future.
