Xiaomi: Introduces new patent to mitigate creases on Foldable Smartphone screen

Whether we like to admit it or not, foldable smartphones have come to stay, and are said to be the future, regardless of whether display technology is not yet so mature.

Μso far, only four of our manufacturers have introduced such a device that is simultaneously available for purchase, and these are none other than Samsung, Motorola, Huawei and Royole.

Of course, new devices from other manufacturers are also expected to be released very soon. As a result, in recent years, almost all of these OEM manufacturers have patented their own technologies related to foldable smartphones.

So, such a patent that was recently filed by Xiaomi, describes in detail its own solution to reduce the aspects that appear without exception on all screens of these devices that have been released so far.

The Foldable Smartphones are available in two different types at the moment. The first design used folds the device and its screen, just like on a tablet. The second design that exists is similar to type telephones clamshell circulating in the past.

The bad thing is that both of these types of folding devices and the screen have one thing in common, which is quite annoying, and is nothing more than the folds that are created on the screens by folding and creasing.

You can very easily see these folds in all Foldable smartphones currently available on the market. Unless they bother you so much and you are not looking to see them, these are sometimes very obvious and are still a pretty serious constructional and aesthetic flaw. Therefore, we have seen many patents released in recent months by different companies, with a wide variety of patents trying to mitigate this problem.

The new patent that was revealed and belongs to Xiaomi, also proposes its own solution to this problem. The company had filed this patent at CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration) the past July of 2019, but it was approved and published on February 2 2021.

This Xiaomi patent is entitled "Support for flexible display structure, flexible display structure and terminal equipment (Translated).

According to documentation, this special design proposed by Xiaomi, includes two independent support structures for flexible OLED display device. The second structure, which exists below the screen is deformable, and therefore, when the device is closed, the screen is unlikely to be affected by folds in the long run.

Now if you ask us if this design with the support mechanisms designed by Xiaomi will work properly, we will only find out if at some point the company finally decides to release one of its own. Foldable Smartphone at the market.

Xiaomi's supposedly foldable smartphone

So far, all we know is that Xiaomi is working on a foldable smartphone codenamed "Cetus“. This device is said to be powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, and will be equipped with one main camera at 108MP and it will "run" MIUI 12 based on Android 11.

If this device that was leaked in live images last month, is the one we see in the photo above, then we can say with confidence that the recipe of the special support mechanism did not work, as the crease we see in the center of the screen takes out eyes.

We only hope that the above device that we see in the photo, is some Demo device that does not have the improved mechanism that the company described to us above, in the patent documentation that it submitted.
