Xiaomi introduced in July in China the 12S Ultra, which is equipped with the sensor IMX989 1″ at 50MP from Sony and visually from Leica. But today the company presented a new prototype Xiaomi 12S Ultra, which attempts to revolutionize Smartphone photography.
As Xiaomi revealed to us, before the official launch of the 12S Ultra, it had built two prototype devices, one that looks like a normal Smartphone and a second device that has an extra sensor Sony IMX989 50 MP 1 inch with support for business professionals Leica M series lenses. This original device still has the UltraWide camera at 48MP, but it has been moved to the side from the center.
The never released Xiaomi 12S Ultra prototype supports several interchangeable Leica lenses with different focal lengths and apertures, bringing a huge improvement in imaging capabilities. Instead of using the phone's built-in lens, it captures light directly from the external lens. Using a secondary sensor reduces light loss that settles right in the center of the image field, allowing users to capture the sharpest photo.
The dedicated camera module is reinforced to support the lens mount which can now be mechanically attached to the frame, while the sensor surface is protected with sapphire glass to prevent wear and scratches during everyday use. On this special Module can be adapted the Leica M series lenses, who are known for their compact body, and turn the Smartphone into a remarkable DSLR camera.
As the video above shows, Leica lenses can be installed just like a DSLR camera with M-mount, and lock onto the phone body with just a simple twist and click.
As far as the software is concerned, there are various additional features such as focus peaking, grid, histogram, zebra lines, histogram, and shooting in 10-bit RAW. Xiaomi says that in this way it tries to expand the capabilities of the camera while maintaining the portability of the device, and below we also have some samples of photos taken with an external Leica lens.
This device is a Concept by Xiaomi and we may never see it in the markets.
