Shortly after the "scandal" of technology use SMR on her RED records, the WD now faces group consumer education with the category of false advertising for some of the discs it markets.
ΟThese disks use technology DM-SMR (Drive-Managed Shingled Magnetic Recording), a physical data recording technique that allows capacity to be increased, but with a large negative impact on random write speeds.
This technique essentially renders disks unsuitable for use on RAID devices that are common in NAS implementations. The "scandal" broke out last April, when Blocks & Files revealed the presence of SMR technology in certain popular WD RED disks and explained the reasons why these disks could not be used in RAID implementations.
WD initially tried to defend this choice by explaining that DM-SMR technology is "tested" and certified for use in implementations SOHO NAS. Also, for more serious implementations NAS "showed" to the most expensive RED PRO or in enterprises Ultrastar disks.
Finally, he published a detailed list of disks that used SMR. But it was already too late, as there were dozens of videos on YouTube that showed that using SMR disks, rebuilding certain RAID implementations was tragically slow or even failed. Thus, the specialized law firm, Hattis & Lukacs (based in Washington), has filed a class action lawsuit against WD and is calling on affected consumers (living in the US) to join.
