Snapdragon 888: All the specifications of the new SoC from Qualcomm (the first SoC with Cortex-X1 and 35% faster GPU)

Following yesterday's preview, Qualcomm today unveiled the full specifications of the new Snapdragon 888 SoC.


Εis a chip that is built with the next generation architecture in 5nm, and the first devices with SD888 SoC will be released in the first quarter of next year.

Several smartphone makers are already competing with each other over who will be the first to introduce a Smartphone with this new SoC. Xiaomi has already announced that it will be the first company to make its world debut SD888, to My 11 which will be presented very soon.

CPU (PROCESSOR)

The SD888 is the first chip to be officially released with the kernel Cortex-X1 (has the basic design of ARM with some modifications from Qualcomm). Compared to A78, the X1 can perform 33% more commands per second, has twice the number of semiconductors (SIMD) and twice its capacity L1 and L2 cache. This kernel (Cortex-X1) works on 2,84GHz.

Then there is a complex of three nuclei Cortex-A78 with clock frequency at 2,4GHz. In addition, we have four cores A55 operating at clock frequency in 1.8GHz. The CPU is also equipped with 4 MB L3 cache and 3 MB System cache.

GPU

As far as the GPU is concerned, the Adreno 660 succeeds against 35% faster performance while improving by 20% energy efficiency (Power efficiency). The GPU is designed to offer games a high frame rate with low latency. The goal is to support up to 144fps in games that have this feature while improving image quality.

The Variable Rate Shading (VRS) is a new feature used in recent GPUs by Nvidia and AMD (including the GPU existing on its consoles PS5 and Xbox). It allows them shaders to work in two or four pixels at a time, instead of the one it was until now.

CAMERA (CAMERA)

The SD888 is the first Snapdragon SoC with triple ISP (previous 800 series SoCs had dual ISPs). This allows the simultaneous processing of three separate streams from the cameras, which can have many uses. For example, it is now possible to handle three independent video streams 4K HDR or take three photos at once 28MP.

This will also make the transition from a wide-angle camera to a wide-angle and telephoto lens smoother, as each camera will use only its own ISP.

Especially for video, the new chipset can capture and play 4K video at 120fps, so it can support a much better 4K high resolution screen, while in photography it is capable of shooting 120 photos per second in 12MP resolution.

Connectivity

This is the first chipset that the modem uses Snapdragon X60 5G, and in contrast to SD865, the modem this time is integrated instead of being on a second external chip. This third generation modem supports connectivity on 6G sub-5 and mmWave, and offers speeds downlink up to 7,5 Gbps and uplink up to 3 Gbps.

The system FastConnect 6900 on Wi-Fi 6G it can reach speeds of up to 3,6 Gbps, and is the fastest Wi-Fi in the Smartphone industry as Qualcomm says. The standard 6E also offers lower latency (latency), which is beneficial for Streaming games to and from a local computer (PC).

AI Engine

The SD888 also has the hypervisor, a feature first added to PCs. It is a feature used on servers or desktops, as it allows multiple operating systems to run simultaneously on the same Hardware, operating completely separately from each other. Charge

There was not much emphasis on charging today, as the QuickCharge 5 announced months ago, is of course also supported by the new SoC. That means he can handle her fast charging at 100W +, while keeping the heat to a minimum. It is compatible with USB Power Delivery and compatible with its previous generations QC starting from 2.0 version.

The Snapdragon 888 will be used in Smartphones that will be released in early 2021. First will be the Xiaomi which will use it in its own flagship by name My 11, and will gradually follow all the other manufacturers.
