Qualcomm: The release of the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC was leaked by mistake

Η Qualcomm seems to have mistakenly given us some information about the next Snapdragon Summit through its website GSMArena

Η Qualcomm usually announces its top chipsets at the end of the year, organizing one journalistic junket in Hawaii during the first week of December.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen1 was announced last December, the Snapdragon 888 released on the same date a year ago, while the Snapdragon 865 was released on December 4 2019.

However, new leaks suggest that Qualcomm can break this tradition and release it Snapdragon 8 Gen2 a few weeks earlier than we are used to.

Η Qualcomm seems to have mistakenly provided some details for the next Snapdragon Summit on its website  GSMArena, but this entry was withdrawn almost immediately.

In this post that was made, it leaked that next snapdragon summit will last 3 days and will take place between November 14 and 17. If so, Qualcomm seems to be announcing the next one Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC at least two weeks earlier than usual.

It appears that the company did not intend to publish this information so early and requested that the relevant article be deleted.

Previous reports indicate that Snapdragon 8 Gen2 will have four different types of CPUs, which will make the design of the new SoC more complex than the one that had the 8 January 1. It is supposed to use a single Cortex-X3 kernel, a pair of cores A720, two cores A710 and three cores A510s.

So the SoC will have overall eight cores separated into four different clusters (1 + 2 + 2 + 3). For comparison, the Snapdragon 8 Gen1 has configuration cluster 1 + 3 + 4 which includes a core Cortex-X2, three Cortex-A710 and fours Cortex-A510 low consumption.

This strange arrangement of cores in CPUs is seen as an attempt by Qualcomm to maintain support for 32-bit applications (AArch32). Maybe the 32-bit applications be phased out, but remain an important part of the Chinese market, where the SoC is expected to become available on a number of leading devices.

As newer cores like Cortex-X3 and Cortex-A720 most likely will lack support in 32 bit, new Gen Qualcomm Gen 2 SoC will maintain a pair of cores A710 to fill this gap.
