The Israeli security company Check Point Research discovered a defect in Mobile Station Modem of Qualcomm, affecting millions of Android phones worldwide.
Η company claims that hackers can exploit the vulnerability and gain access to text messages (SMS), telephone calls, and in some cases even to unlock the SIM card.
His report Check Point reveals that Mobile Station Modem an integral part of Qualcomm SoCs dating back to the early 1990s, is still used today in some of the most recent 5G chipset the company's.
In fact, it can be found in some of its latest models Samsung, Google, Xiaomi, LG, OnePlus and many other OEM Smartphone manufacturers. So, logically, this vulnerability affects a significant share of Android smartphones worldwide.
The Check Point estimates that up to 30% of all Android Smartphones have the software necessary to operate this type of Qualcomm modem, they are certainly vulnerable to this vulnerability.
The report further reveals that hackers can exploit this vulnerability to «enter malicious code into the modem from Android. This gives the attacker instant access to the user's call history and SMS, and even the ability to listen to the user's conversations."
Intruders can also exploit this vulnerability to unlock the SIM card and overcome any restrictions imposed by service providers.
Η Qualcomm is aware of the vulnerability and the company has already released a new software version as a solution to the problem.
In a statement to Tom's Guide , a representative of Qualcomm specifically stated that:
It is worth noting that the directory number assigned to the vulnerability (CVE-2020-11292) is not included in any of the previous Android security newsletters December of 2020. However Google may have included it in a previous security update without mentioning it in the newsletter.
The company will fully address the issue that arises with this vulnerability in its next security update June 2021 to be done on her behalf Google for all Android devices.
At present, however, it is not entirely clear whether the problem has been successfully addressed for all affected devices.
So, if you also have a Smartphone that is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC, and you have not received any recent security updates from November of 2020, your device is probably still vulnerable to vulnerabilities, but there is also the case that the manufacturer of your phone has fixed the vulnerability without having officially announced it.
