PlasticARM: A plastic flexible chipset that will revolutionize the field of IoT

Η ARM proceeded to unveil a new prototype microchip that will have as construction material not silicon, but plastic, and would be calledi PlasticARM.

ΤMicrochips other than PCs and smartphones are now ubiquitous in almost every device you can imagine, from cars, washing machines to light bulbs.

But now the ARM has unveiled a new prototype microchip that will be made not of silicon but of plastic, and will be called PlasticARM.

This is not the first flexible chip we have seen based on plastic, but it is the most complex. New PlasticARM it contains 32-bit Cortex-M0 CPU (the cheapest and simplest processor kernel that belongs to the family Cortex-M of ARM), and 456 bytes ROM and 128 bytes of RAM.

The new PlasticARM consists of above 18.000 logic gates, which as Arm is at least 12 times more from the previous chip made and based on plastic.

The chip was designed in collaboration with the flexible electronics company PragmatIC, and as the company designers explain to us in a document published in Nature, this chip does not yet have the same functionality as other Silicon Chips.

For example, the new PlasticARM will only be able to run a trio of test-embedded circuits during construction, though Arm researchers say they are working on future versions of this chip which will also allow the installation of new code.

The PlasticARM it will not be faster or more energy efficient, but it will be the most flexible Chip ever created and will have almost unlimited usability.

What it does PlasticARM to be so special is the use of flexible thin film transistors or TFT of oxide metal it has. These transistors can be printed on surfaces that bend and bend without affecting their functionality, and unlike processors based on brittle silicon substrates, it allows cheap processors to print on materials such as plastic and paper.

As her researchers explain Arm, this new plastic manufacturing technology would allow the use of microchips in all kinds of products, such as any milk bottle, to detect defects, replacing the use of expiration dates for their sale.

Η Arm claims that its use PlasticARM chip will create a new 'iinternet of everythingAnd will be able to integrate into more than one trillion different products and items over the next decade.

Plastic chips, of course, have many major drawbacks (at least so far), and they are certainly not going to replace silicon processors in the short term. They are also very inefficient in terms of energy consumption, density and efficiency.

The PlasticARM consumes 21 milliwatts power for example, but the 99% of this energy is essentially a waste, with just the 1% be used for calculation. The PlasticARM It is also relatively large in size with a surface area of 59,2 square millimeters, that is, it is about 1.500 times bigger by the size of a processor Cortex M0 based on silicon.
