PCIe 5.0: Power up to 600 watts for graphics cards will be provided by the new power socket

The welcoming 16-pin microfit for the upcoming GeForce RTX 3090 TI which is rumored on some websites, is based on implementation MOLEX, but will definitely not be standard on all cards.

Μup to three 8-pin power supply for current high-end graphics cards, the result is a tangled cable connection that is slowly but surely reaching the limits of what is acceptable and reasonable.

The old sockets MOLEX 6 + 2 in this form are now technically obsolete. The welcoming Microfit 12-pin in NVIDIA Founders Edition It was ultimately just a transitional stage and is due to the "clean design" of the cards - it does not set a new standard, but remains a Mesoamerican solution.

The welcoming 16-pin microfit for the upcoming GeForce RTX 3090 TI which is rumored on some websites, is based on implementation MOLEX, but it will definitely not be standard on all cards. What the NVIDIA will eventually present to Founders Edition, is still a secret, but for sure there will be a whole new plug.

In addition to the power supply manufacturers, several graphics card manufacturers have already expressed some relief that the PCI GIS has also identified a new "high power socket" (H +) as standard within the specification of the new standard PCIe 5.0. This is shown below:

This connection design was specifically designed to support cards with power consumption up to 600 Watts. Hence the new reception 12VHPWR does not match power auxiliary connectors 2 × 3 and 2 × 4 PCI Express. The power supply terminals of the connector 12VHPWR have distance only 3,0 mm, while the contacts on the older connector 2 x 3 × 3 (6 pins) and link 2 x 4 (6 + 2 pins) have a greater distance 4,2 millimetres. Twelve large contacts carry the power supply (2 × 6) and the four smaller contacts that follow are for sideband signals.

The PCI GIS sets the current of the pins (excluding the four pins below) to 9,2 A per pin / position with a limit 30 ° C rise above ambient temperature in + 12 VDC with all twelve contacts activated. This gives 55,2 A in one direction for the 12 volt power rail, or 662,4 W.

Of course, tolerances and reductions for safety reasons are still taken into account here as a whole in a percentage of 11%, so that in the end the 600 watts to be still guaranteed.
