Warning: Scammers love Black Friday and Cyber ​​Monday as much as shoppers

For one third of Generation Z consumers (aged 18-24) and millennials (25-40 years old), shopping in the middle of a discount period is already a favorite habit. This trend has a direct impact on the average value of the basket - on these special shopping days, consumers may spend up to 360% more on e-shops than on any other day of the year.

This year Black Friday "falls" on November 29 and Cyber ​​Monday on December 2. The consumer frenzy, however, lasts more than twenty-four hours, as the example of "Black Friday" shows - the growing buying interest in the offers starts on Wednesday, peaks on Friday and returns to the level of Tuesday from Saturday.

This season, Greek consumers seem to be eagerly awaiting the upcoming offers and being properly organized for the intensive shopping race - on average, 3 to 3,4 items per person will be purchased with an estimated total value of 180 euros. It is interesting to note that, according to a recent survey, men are the ones who intend to spend more (on average 202 euros) compared to women (157 euros). Almost one in five Greek shoppers are chasing opportunities only online and at least half intend to do online research and visit both online and physical stores for their purchases. As a result, global data show that this is definitely a very important period for e-commerce, as sales are almost tenfold.

"During the offers, we mainly benefit from discounts on clothing and footwear. Cosmetics and perfumes come second to our preferences, followed by electronic devices. With almost equal zeal we also buy kitchenware and household appliances. These are, after all, more or less the categories that are most popular on the internet one day, "says Marcin Glogowski, PayPal Managing Director for Central and Eastern Europe.

As the popularity of Black Friday and Cyber ​​Monday grows, so does the threat from cybercriminals. With the advent of November and December, the number of fraud attempts increases by 18% compared to other times of the year.

"Vigilance plays a very important role, especially during the offers, when we shop hurriedly from the street trying to catch the best deal. "After all, that's why it's so important to use the payment method that guarantees that it will help us in case something goes wrong," said Marcin Glogowski on behalf of PayPal. "This need becomes even more apparent and imperative every time one makes purchases via mobile devices. According to a survey by PayPal and Ipsos, three-quarters of consumers worldwide already shop online, yet more than half of shoppers are concerned about the security of these transactions.

According to analyzes, 1,36% of all transactions made on Black Friday and 1% of transactions on Cyber ​​Monday may be an attempt at fraud. Assuming that globally the average value of a payment processed during this period is $ 243 (approximately € 220), the losses on the part of buyers can reach several thousand dollars.
