There have been many reports over the past few months of Netflix's plans to combat the phenomenon shared passwords, with the company having already started testing in some countries by charging a small fee for each additional user who shares the same password.
This time, however, it looks like we're even closer to a wider implementation of the new policy in the majority of countries where the streaming service is available.
As the website reveals The Verge, the goal that Netflix has set is to give the option of paying extra for subscribers who want to share their password with people who live in a different house by the end of March. No prices are mentioned and Netflix acknowledges that there may be many reactions that will lead to cancellations of subscriptions, but on the other hand it estimates that in the long run it will manage to increase its overall turnover.
In countries where the change has already been implemented, Netflix does not actually block password sharing. Instead requires an authentication code to be entered which comes to the account administrator and after the user enters it he can continue to watch content on the platform normally, with the only difference being the regular display of messages to pay the extra cost.
It will be interesting to see how the major markets will respond to the new measure and whether it will actually start blocking access to the service.
