Netflix, Amazon and other Internet TV content providers will now be required to provide 30% of European-produced content within the EU, the European Parliament decided on Tuesday.
MEPs have decided to take this legislative initiative as more and more people watch TV content online, both on TV and on PC, as well as on mobile devices.
Under the new legal framework, online platforms will be required, inter alia, to finance, directly or indirectly, European film and television production, to be ratified by the Member States of the Union, which will have about two years to integrate this legal framework in national law.
Some of the larger platforms already provide largely European content within the EU, but will have to increase it in order to comply with the new norm.
European content should be highlighted in the platforms, according to the new rules.
Representatives of Amazon and Netflix declined to comment on the matter, according to Bloomberg.
In 2018, Netflix's budget for European productions increased to $ 1 billion, while Amazon will soon have at least 12 European production lines on its platform, up from one in 2014.
