Η Microsoft has tried in recent years with Edge to regain the market share it had lost to other browsers, most notably Google Chrome. Although the Edge has improved significantly in recent years, it has not been able to regain any significant market share. His latest data NetMarketshare give it just 4,22% on desktops and laptops, significantly behind even Explorer which has 9,64%.
This leads the company to significantly change the Edge, leaving behind the EdgeHTML engine. In the future, Edge will use the Chromium engine on which Google's Chrome is based, as well as other browsers such as Opera and Vivaldi. the new browser is codenamed "Anaheim", but when available to users it will continue to use the Edge name.
This new version of Edge will not only be available for Windows 10. It will be able to run on all versions of Windows still supported by Microsoft, namely Windows 7 and 8.1, and will later be released for macOS. It will have all the good and not so good features of Chrome, with whatever changes Microsoft chooses to make, while it will also have a compatibility layer for websites that insist on requiring Internet Explorer.
The adoption of the Chromium engine by Microsoft is certainly good news for those involved in web development, as they will have fewer compatibility issues to deal with.
