Security researchers analyzed nine popular WiFi router and found a total of 226 possible vulnerabilities in them, even when running the most recent firmware.
Όas reported by Bleeping Computer, the routers analyzed come from Asus, AVM, D-Link, Netgear, Edimax, TP-Link, Synology and Linksys and are widely used. Researchers at the IoT Inspector conducted the security tests in collaboration with the journal chips, focusing on models used primarily by small businesses and home users.
Although not all defects carry the same risk, the team found some common problems that affected most of the models tested:
- Obsolete Linux kernel in the firmware.
- Outdated multimedia functions and VPN.
- Excessive dependence on older versions BusyBox.
- Use weak default passwords such as “admin".
- Presence of coded credentials in plain text (plain text).
All affected manufacturers responded to the researchers' findings and released firmware updates.
The researchers showed one exploit found in one of the routers, which exported the AES key used for firmware encryption, thus allowing verification checks to be passed on the device to the infected firmware, resulting in malware being introduced into the router.
If you also have one of the above Routers listed in the image above, you should immediately proceed to update the Firmware of your device.
