Belgium: Accuses Xiaomi, OnePlus and OPPO of possible "espionage" from their Smartphones

The Belgian intelligence services, without any evidence, have issued a warning about the risk of "espionage" from Xiaomi Smartphone, OnePlus and OPPO.

ΣWith regard to technology privacy, we should always be wary of the various announcements made from time to time by governments, especially when referring to "espionage".

Many of these categories usually hide political motives, and a typical example is Huawei, which has been effectively isolated from many countries even in Europe, at the instigation of the US.

Popular Chinese Smartphone manufacturers such as Xiaomi, OnePlus and OPPO, in recent years have managed to increase their sales and especially their popularity in the western markets, thanks to distinguished devices that have an incredible quality / price ratio.

Today, however, the Belgian intelligence services, without any evidence, have issued a warning about the risk of "espionage" (recording of personal data better) from its Smartphone Xiaomi, OnePlus and OPPO.

In particular, the representative of the Belgian state security Ingrid Van Daele, said that the Belgian intelligence services want to draw the attention of consumers to the possible threat of "espionage" that the 3 Chinese companies may make through their devices.

Although no specific incidents have been identified, this accusation is based, according to the Belgian Minister of Justice, Vincent VanQuickenborne, that there is a systematic and deep cooperation between these companies and the Chinese state.

In other words, they claim that these companies may be hiding a cooperation agreement or something similar with the Chinese government, and the existence of a law in China, which obliges all companies to cooperate with the Chinese state, is mentioned as an excuse. .

Xiaomi, OnePlus and OPPO accused of possible "espionage" by Belgium

Although there is still no evidence for these allegations, they essentially "copy" the concerns expressed from time to time by the United States of America on the risks to users' privacy and national security, but also to its Indian Government, which in 2020 banned the use 52 Chinese applications.

Belgium therefore advised its citizens to be careful and prudent in the use of smartphones by companies such as Xiaomi, OnePlus and OPPO, even recommending to avoid their purchase.

So far, only the Belgian representative of OPPO has responded to these accusations, emphasizing that the company (OPPO) maintains very good relations with the governments of more than 40 countries in which the company is commercially active, always operating in accordance with all local laws. and regulations.

So far there is no official response from Xiaomi, but it is expected to be placed in these categories soon.

These statements by Belgium are partly strange, as there is no evidence or research to substantiate these allegations of "espionage". But above all, it is even more strange that the accusations are based on the unclear assumptions of governments such as the US, which on the other hand does not intervene against companies such as Facebook and herself Google, which they use with their users to collect their personal data in an "immoral" way.

Just think of the many reports that have been made from time to time about "espionage" by her Google through the microphones of the smartphones or the many categories that it has encountered Facebook on the theft of data of its subscribers.

These companies also work closely with their government USA and other organizations, so why be surprised or even more shocked if Chinese smartphone makers do the same to their government?
