Seagate launches 14TB Hard Drives

Η Seagate will bring Barracuda Pro 14TB models for desktops, IronWolf for your NAS needs and SkyHawk for Video Surveillance for up to 389 days before you need to consider buying a second 14TB drive.

SSDs have long held the crown of local storage performance, with the gap between hard drives and flash storage growing even wider than when M.2 PCI Expres appeared. However, mechanical hard drives still win if your main concern is the amount of storage space offered. Today, Seagate reminded us exactly of the gap between HDD and SSD in this regard, releasing three different types of 14TB hard drives.

You may have noticed a "common factor" in recent years from hard drive manufacturers. It is no longer just a matter of offering hard drives of different capacities, but instead the choice will be based on where we intend to use the hard drive. Will it be for general use on a desktop computer? Used as part of a NAS? Or part of a system dedicated to a single task such as video recording?

With that in mind, Seagate has launched 14TB versions of the Barracuda (compute), IronWolf (NAS) and SkyHawk (surveillance) hard drives.

The new 14TB hard drives replace the 12TB models at the top of Seagate offerings. For general purpose desktop PCs for consumers, the 14TB Barracuda Pro is the hard choice. It spins at 7,200rpm and is complemented by a 256MB cache that allows data rates of 250MB / s to be maintained. The unit has a full five-year warranty with a workload limit of 300TB / year. Seagate also includes two years of rescue data recovery services, giving you a relief for data recovery.

There are, to be precise, two NAS 14TB drives available in the format Iron Wolf and Iron Wolf Pro. IronWolf includes a Health Management system, rotary vibration sensors and each unit is designed to be always active. The warranty is three years and Seagate puts the life of the disc at one million hours. The differences with the IronWolf Pro are that it includes two years of data rescue and its lifespan is increased to 1,2 million hours combined with a five-year warranty.

Finally, we have the SkyHawk, which is intended for surveillance activities. Each unit includes ImagePerfect firmware to ensure seamless video capture, a Health Management system, the ability to record up to 64 HD cameras simultaneously and is supported by a three-year warranty with a lifespan of one million hours. If you have a network video recorder or a surveillance DVR, then this is the disc for you. At 14TB it can record over 9.345 hours of HD video, which is worth 389 days.

As they report Tom's Hardware, the 14TB Barracuda Pro is expected to cost $ 580 / 500,80 €, the 14TB IronWolf $ 530 / 457,63 € and the IronWolf Pro version is at $ 600 / 518,07 €. Finally, the 14TB SkyHawk is expected at $ 510 / 440,36 €. In terms of availability, they are on sale today, but it may take some time for the stock to reach your selected retailer.
