Google Maps: New ecological routing function for maps in Greece

Η Google announced the gradual availability of the new eco-routing mode on google maps, in Greece and in almost 40 other countries all over Europe

Thanks to this new feature, every person traveling in Greece will now be able to choose the route with the lowest fuel consumption, which helps save money and reduce carbon emissions – with just one move through the app.

The company's information in detail:

Imagine you are planning a day trip from your home to Athens to Vravrona – about an hour's drive. To decide how to get there you open Google Maps, which gives you many route options, including walking, cycling and public transport. Given the length of the trip it makes more sense to drive and immediately look for the fastest route. But what if there were other options – such as a ride that would take about nine minutes longer but save you almost 30% of expected fuel consumption;

It's a fact: Ecological routes in Greece and throughout Europe

This is now possible thanks to the ecological routes in Google Maps, which as of today, are gradually available in Greece and in almost 40 other countries throughout Europe. So you can choose the route with the lowest fuel consumption, which not only helps you save money on fuel, but also reduces carbon emissions — something that is of particular concern to many Europeans. This is a completely realistic concern as, according to his report Statista's 2022, road transport is the largest source of carbon emissions across Europe.

In addition to showing the shortest route, Google Maps will now also show the most fuel-efficient route, regardless of whether it coincides with the fastest route. With just a few "clicks" you will be able to see the relative fuel savings and time difference between the two routes and choose the one that suits you best. Do you want to always choose the fastest route? No problem – just adjust your preferences in Settings.

Eco routes have a positive impact around the world. Since their implementation in the US, and Canada it is estimated that they have already helped remove more than half a million metric tons of carbon emissions — the equivalent of 100.000 fewer cars on the road.

Choose the most economical route based on engine type

The most economical route also depends on the engine type of your car. For example, diesel engines are usually more efficient at saving fuel at higher speeds than gasoline or gas engines, while hybrid and electric vehicles perform better in traffic conditions. That's why, in the coming weeks, we'll be enabling drivers looking for eco-drives in Europe, the US and Canada to specify their engine type — gas or natural gas, diesel, hybrid or electric vehicle (EV) — so that they can choose the best route and have the most accurate estimates of fuel or energy efficiency.

This technology was made possible thanks to data from the US Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and data from the European Environment Agency. By combining these with driving trends in Google Maps, we were able to develop advanced machine learning models based on the most popular types of drivers in specific regions.

The Minister of Environment and Energy, Costas Skrekas, stated:

With the new service on Google Maps, which will also be available in Greece, citizens will be able to make more environmentally friendly choices, which will also help save money on their daily journeys. Tackling the climate crisis and protecting the environment are today more important than ever. By joining forces we can certainly achieve more in the face of these demanding challenges.

Google's Director of Marketing for Southeast Europe, Maria Fouda, stated:

We are very happy to announce the availability of the new eco-routing feature on Google Maps. Thanks to this new function, every person moving in Greece will now be able to choose the route with the lowest fuel consumption, which helps to save money and reduce carbon emissions, all with one move through the application. In this way we take another step in helping people make more informed choices, remaining firm in our commitment to promote sustainable development in Greece.
We help you make sustainable choices with Google Maps and more

Whether you're commuting or traveling, Google can help you with some helpful tips to get where you want to go in a more sustainable way:

It's electric! If you own an electric vehicle, just search for "EV charging station" on Google Maps to find charging stations nearby, along with other useful details such as port types and charging speeds. At some stations, you can even see if a charger is immediately available, helping you avoid waiting and save valuable time.

Walk our route: Google Maps offers turning directions for pedestrians. To make sure they're not on the wrong road, Live View uses augmented reality technology to display clearly visible arrows and directions on the map. In addition, you can preview the route with Street View.

Navigate public transport with ease: By tapping on the public transport icon in Directions, you get directions on how to get to your destination by bus, train, metro and even by ferry. As long as the information is available, you can see real-time arrival and departure times, transfers and delays. Google Maps provides all the information you need to be prepared, such as if there's any traffic, what the temperature is outside, and if there are wheelchair accessible routes available.

Choose sustainable accommodation: Google Search helps you find hotels committed to green practices. Hotels that have been certified to meet high sustainability standards by independent organizations such as Green Key or EarthCheck will have an eco-certification mark next to their name. This helps you understand their environmentally friendly practices, from waste reduction to energy efficiency and water conservation measures.

This is all part of our own commitment to make the sustainable choice an easier choice, encouraging one billion people to do so through Google products by the end of the year.
