Gaming on Android - Terraria: A very fun indie game for Android and more

I have been thinking for a long time about writing an article about Gaming on Android and so, I will write about one of my favorite games - Terraria.

ΣThere are certainly many free games at Play Store for Android devices but rarely I personally will find someone who will be of particular interest to me or will keep me for quite some time.

Admittedly, I'm not dealing with it Gaming on Android quite often but at intervals, I can find a toy that will hold me. In this case, this game that kept me going was Terraria.

I have spent several hours at Terraria but not in the smartphone version, mainly on the PC (where the game was originally released) and now, on the occasion of the last update that was released where all the content of the game is identical to that of the PC, I said to write an article about it as I think it is worth the 5.50 euros (and more) at which it is available.

But before I get into the details of the game, I will start with the very basics like, what is it Terraria coke.

What is a Terraria?

The Terraria it is a 2D Sandbox Game where the Gameplay is based around exploration, building, crafting, combat, survival and mining. It can be played single player and Multiplayer. The game's graphics are very similar to SNES games and its gameplay brings a lot to Minecraft with several differences however.

The game so far is available at:

  • PC - Version 1.4.2.3
  • iPhone & iPad - Version 1.4.0.5.2
  • Android - Version 1.4.0.5.2.1
  • Google Stadia - Version 1.4.0.5.3
  • Xbox One & PS4 - Version 1.21 (1.3.5.3)

The player starts at one procedurally generated world with some basic tools (pickaxe, ax, sword) which can be used to interact with the world and collect various objects and minerals such as: iron, gold, silver coke. which he can use to make better tools, weapons or objects that will help him in various areas of the game.

There are various enemies and monsters in the world that are aggressive to the player and vary by region or various other conditions such as day or night. In addition to the usual enemies / monsters that the player will encounter, he can also fight various boss which are more difficult with various mechanics but if the player manages to beat them, he will be rewarded with quite strong objects that will help him along the way.

In all of this, there are four levels of difficulty in creating the world. These difficulty levels are:

  • Journey Mode - The player can change various settings of the game making it easier or harder at will. Overall it is a much more relaxed one play through which has a greater emphasis on creative and sandbox piece of the game, despite progression.
  • Classic mode - The default mode and level of difficulty of the game. Recommended for new players as the enemies are not as difficult as in the next two modes.
  • Expert Mode - More difficult mode that raises it HP & Damage of enemies as well as adds various mechanics in various boss, making them more difficult but with more rewards. Also, the boss's HP goes up depending on how many players play together.
  • master mode - An even more difficult one Expert Mode with even more rewards. Even I who have spent several hours in the game, if I am not properly prepared, can die several times in various boss fight or even from simple enemies. I definitely do not recommend it to a new player.

Finally, in addition to enemies and monsters, there are also friendly NPC (Non-Player Characters) with which the player can interact to buy various items such as health potions, weapons coke.

Gameplay and how the game starts

Once someone builds character and world, then the game begins.

Starting Terraria
What the player will see when the game starts as well as a little guidance regarding the Interface

First you start in the center of the world with some basic tools (as I mentioned above) which are:

  • Copper Pickaxe - You use it to do it enamel the various blocks around you like grass, stones and various minerals.
  • Copper Ankle Support - You use it to cut trees for wood.
  • Copper Shortword - You use it to fight the various enemies you will face.

From there you are free to do whatever you want. In the beginning also, there is one NPC, The Guide who helps new players with various tips / hints about the game and how it works.

Unfortunately, there is no guidance on this crafting, what should the player do? These are things you learn by playing or looking online at a beginner's guide.

I suggest him Getting Started Guide by Terraria Wiki. The link to is the following:

One thing I did personally when I started was to cut down some trees for wood and build a small house that would help me survive as well as put whatever things I needed. I dug a little under the house to find stone and no minerals and then I made a bow which will help me fight the various monsters as I explore the world.

My little house (it is now night) in which the Zombies can not enter

So after dawn, I went to explore the world little by little and find loot that will help me in the long run.

Finally, I managed to find a chest inside a large tree with a relatively satisfactory loot for a start

Overall, I did not continue this playthrough much as it was purely a test to see how the game plays on my device (Xiaomi Mi 8). The game ran fine without problems (lag, low FPS kok) and is identical to the PC version (with the main difference obviously, the Interface).

However, what I want to emphasize is that in Terraria, you can do whatever you want and play it any way you want. There are no restrictions on the game.

You set your goals, what will be your next step, if you are going to farm boss / mobs and so on. Definitely at some point you should go a little further to see the rest of the content that the game offers but you can do it with your own fold.

So, I'll mention now why I like it Terraria and why I think it's worth the money.

You are free to do whatever you want, whenever you want, in any way you want

Having spent many hours in the game (437 hours on Steam at the time of writing), I have done many things in the game and I have not even seen / done them all. Each time I did something different.

One I was making my base, I was decorating it and the other, I was sitting and boss drugs and various items. The images below are from two worlds that I have thrown most of the time myself.

You can modify everything in terms of the landscape or the area you are in, as long as you have the right tools / objects. You can build a wooden house with different wallpapers in each room, put trees and rivers around it or take dynamite and blow it all up.

In short, the only limitation you have is your imagination (and obviously, the objects you have).

Apart from the creative part of the game, however, there is also a fairly smooth and nice progression.

A very smooth progression with many options

You start with the basic tools. As you go, you will find more and more minerals which you turn into better tools / armor / weapons and you become stronger and stronger.

After you reach a satisfactory level in terms of your armor and weapons, you fight the "first" (and I put it in quotes because you can do it in any order you want) of the game, the Eye of Cthulhu.

The Eye of Cthulhu

You kill it and take other objects with which you become even stronger. And in all of this, you can try different weapons.

E.g. you can play with a bow and weigh from afar or with a sword and weigh up close or my favorite, play with various spells.

Each weapon has its own playstyle and you can rely on someone build on it, which you can change at any time, provided you have the right items / armor / weapons. As you go you find objects that increase the speed at which you move, make you endure more wood, be able to jump twice, jump and so on…

You make elixirs / filters which also give you various buffs for a few minutes. Above damage, above defense, to move faster or to be able to swim in the lava. These are some of the many filters / elixirs you can make.

And for those who are not so combat, there are options to change the appearance of the character through various cosmetic items (dyes, clothes, hair styles).

There are many items (more than 3500) and every playthrough or world / character you start will be a different experience. These are the main reasons I personally like the game so much and I think it's worth the price.

A short summary…

Terraria is a game that is for all kinds of gamers. Casual or hardcore gamer, does not matter. It can be played in many different ways as the game is made to allow it.

You want a relaxed one play through where you will mainly build various things without really caring about it progression; You can make a world in Journey Mode.

On the other hand if you want to test your limits and spend time on progression in order to "Terminations" (because it never ends) the game, you can go to master mode where they will actually be tested skills yours and the how properly prepared are you.

Either way, either you go to Journey or in Master Mode, you can still do everything without any restrictions, as long as you have the will.

The content that the game offers is very large and I can say with confidence that for 5.50 euros at which it is available Terraria, is a very good investment for endless hours of entertainment.

And in all of this, there is Multiplayer that you can enjoy the game as it is, with friends. Something that makes it even more entertaining and enjoyable.

The only complaint I have in Android version is that it's hard for me to get used to touch controll as I am used to Mouse + Keyboard. But over time, I think I'll get used to it as well interface of the game is almost complete customizable.

Or a few words about the PC version

I also wanted to make a brief reference to its version Terraria for PC. Having now reached his latest update (after 10 years), now has official mod support.

What does this mean; In case someone has done everything since content that offers the game, can through tModLoader on Steam to download various mods which have been made by other players.

These mods can be something very simple (like new set of armor and weapons) or even more boss, different worlds, leveling systems, story modes And much more.

I know, this article is already over 1800 words and I can not stop writing but even in this area the game is customizable adding so many more hours content which can be checked by anyone at no extra cost (except for the extra purchase of the game for PC at 10 euros).

Links to purchase the game

Finally, I will list below some links for buying the game in the various stores that are available.

I will make a small remark, however. Terraria versions for PS4 and Xbox One, NOT are still upgraded to the latest version found on PC, Android and iPhone / iPad. The latest version (Journey's End) is expected to come, which adds Journey & Master Mode as well as a lot of content, within the next 2 months.
