ΤFM radio has great features - it 's free, it does not use your data, it often has better LTE reception, it offers music and news. Why are manufacturers increasingly reluctant to include it in their phones? In the following graph we see the FM Radio per year, manufacturer and models of it. The peak was the period 2008-2010. At the bottom right you can see who is still putting radio on their cell phones. We also see in the graphic the Apple which never put a radio in its mobile phones. It is important to note that the chart shows the number of models per manufacturer, not sales - it's up to you as a consumer.
So why bother installing a radio? One reason is the rise of cheaper music streaming - something that many companies, led by Apple, are pushing for. Sometimes the receiver for FM Radio is present but lacks software support - as was the case with the Galaxy S9 / S9 + in the US. and Canada, or the Xiaomi Mi A1. Samsung Galaxy S series tends to be the exception, as most phones over 400 euros do not support radio.
Unfortunately, FM radio broadcasts will stop as technology advances. Norway has already shut down its national FM radio stations. The successor to analog radio is already here - the DAB and HD radio. New technologies can have more stations in the same bandwidth, offering more variety and improved quality. Unfortunately, there is no widespread support for these digital standards. The LG Stylus 2 (since the beginning of 2016) is the only phone that has a DAB + receiver.
It seems that music buying services are killing the free radio on our mobiles. In a short time, as it seems, it will exist only in models intended for third world countries.
