Face recognition: Failure for 42 of the 110 devices tested.

ΈA Dutch non-profit organization has examined 110 smartphone models and found that the face recognition feature used as a secure device lock does not work as well as 42 smartphones.

The study, conducted by Dutch Consumers' Association and its international partners, found that having a photo of the phone owner is enough to unlock 42 of the tested smartphones.

Any photo will be taken, such as those from social media, CCTV footage or other media.

The results of this study are worrying. The use of a printed photograph of the owner's face is the first test the devices have undergone, and they have been used to bypass device locking through face recognition, before embarking on more complex methods, including creating a special mask or and the entire XNUMXD printed head of the Smartphone holder.

Any face recognition system that fails in the first method with photographs is usually considered useless in terms of security through face recognition.

So according to Consumentenbond, some of their models Asus, BlackBerry, Huawei, Lenovo, LG, Nokia, Samsung, Sony and Xiaomi failed these tests.

Apple devices that make use of it  dynamic face recognition , survived the trials, keeping their reputation intact.
