According to a report published on Friday (through the TechCrunch ), Essential has made a new acquisition. For an unknown amount, the company founded by Andy Rubin, the "father" of Android, bought Cloud Magic. The latter is the company that created the oldest Newton Mail application. The company closed the email premium application in September, leaving 40.000 subscribers hanging. Those running Cloud Magic may have figured out that a paid email service would have a competitive edge with free email apps like Gmail and Outlook.
The role that the company will play as part of Essential is unknown. In May, Essential canceled its second smartphone to focus on the Essential Home smart speaker. Subsequently, this Project was terminated and 30% of the company's employees were laid off. The latest information is that Essential is making a AI portable smartphone with a small screen. The device will work with voice commands, will automatically respond to text messages and emails for users. The "game changer" gadget will also make phone calls.
Essential has $ 300 million in funding to help build its unique smartphone, which could be unveiled next month at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. And in a way, the acquisition of Cloud Magic was done to promote the capabilities of the new rumored AI phone.
