EETT: Turnover over 5 billion euros in telecommunications

ΞFor the third consecutive year, the turnover in telecommunications exceeded 5 billion euros, according to the annual review of electronic communications and postal services for 2017, published by the National Telecommunications and Post Commission.


According to the report, in electronic communications, the key figures of the domestic market either moved positively or remained at levels similar to 2016. The turnover of the sector exceeded 5 billion euros with the revenues from telecommunication services occupying the largest percentage (88%). Total investment fell by about 12%, representing almost 20% of the industry 's total turnover, with an equal distribution between fixed and mobile networks (53% vs. 47%).

The contribution of the sector's turnover to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Greece amounted to 2,8%, slightly reduced compared to 2016, given that the GDP growth was higher than that of the industry (2% vs. 0,2, XNUMX%).

In terms of the number of telephone lines, it continued to increase marginally compared to 2016, with the penetration reaching 44,2% of the population, while the fixed telephony traffic decreased by 4,5%, mainly due to the reduction of duration of national calls to landlines as well as international calls.

The number of mobile telephony connections reached 16,2 million, showing an increase of 1,5% compared to 2016, with active connections increasing comparatively more (3,2%) amounting to approximately 13 million. Fixed broadband connections reached 3.795.410 lines, recording an increase of 4,9% and broadband penetration reached 35,2% of the population (compared to 33,3% at the end of 2016).

The penetration of mobile broadband reached 65,7% of the population (compared to 55,2% at the end of 2016) moving at still low levels. However, the margins for improvement are significant given that the population coverage rate on 4G networks was close to that of 3G networks (98% vs. 99,6%) and that the majority of Internet traffic was for the first time through 4G networks (56,7 , 2017% in December 32,6 compared to 2016% in December XNUMX).

Postal services 
In terms of postal services, according to the report in 2017, total market revenues increased slightly by 0,4% compared to 2016, reaching 549,4 million euros, coming from 356,2 million. items, 5,4% less than last year.

The revenue share of the Universal Service Provider (UPS) in the total market decreased to 36% from 38% in 2016, while at the same time the share of courier companies increased to 61% from 59%. The share of companies with Special Licenses remained stable, at 3%.

The distribution of postal items within the country (90%) brought the largest percentage of revenues of the Greek postal market (67%).

Revenues from the handling of 43,4 million parcels amounted to 249,5 million euros, showing an increase of 4,2% compared to 2016 thanks to the dynamic growth of e-commerce.

Revenues from the handling of 312,8 million envelopes amounted to 299,9 million euros, down 2,6% compared to 2016, due to the continued substitution of e-mail correspondence by e-mail.

Finally, 79 new companies entered the courier market, bringing the total number of Generally Licensed companies to 543. Courier companies handled files at 43% and parcels at 57% of the total number of items.
