A case was filed against 5 people for fraud with the method of changing the sim card (sim swap)

A case of fraud was investigated by the Cybercrime Prosecution Sub-Directorate of Northern Greece by the method of replacing / changing a sim card.


ΜOn the occasion of this case, useful tips are provided to avoid deceiving citizens

From the Sub-Directorate Cybercrime Prosecution of Northern Greece, a regular procedure case file was formed 5 people for fraud, by the method of replacing / changing a sim card (sim swap).

In particular, the stakeholders gained access to the national e-banking service and using the technique sim swap bypassed the additional authentication process and removed 42.000 euro.

As part of the preliminary investigation, she was contacted Cybercrime Prosecution Sub-Directorate of Northern Greece with banking institutions resulting in commitment and return 29.000 euros to the native.

This was followed by a digital analysis of the data and digital data of the case, during which the identities of the perpetrators were identified and then a home search was carried out, during which they were found and confiscated:

  • (4) mobile devices,
  • (2) laptops,
  • storage media as well as mobile connection cards.

The case file that was formed was submitted to the Prosecutor's Office of Thessaloniki.

It is recalled that the method sim swap is a technique in which the perpetrator, using social engineering techniques (manipulation) gains control of SIM card of the victim's cell phone.

Specifically, the perpetrator having access to the user's personal data (eg by "phishing" - phishing, using malicious applications - programs, etc.), takes advantage of the possibility change SIM card, obtaining a new card to replace the one held by the legal holder.

In this way, it receives calls and messages intended for the victims and steals the one-time passwords (OTP) or security verification messages, etc.

On the occasion of this case, the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate informs the citizens:

  • do not disclose the password to anyone and do not enter the password on unknown websites electronic banking (e-banking), that is username and password, or card numbers.

It is noted that banks never and in no way request customer codes online,

  • if the mobile phone stops working for unusual reasons, they should contact the mobile service provider immediately and confirm that the SIM card has not been replaced,
  • to frequently control the movements of their bank accounts,
  • have up-to-date antivirus software and program,
  • restrict personal information, especially on social media (Social Media),
  • not to open suspicious hyperlinks (links) and not to send personal data and data to anyone,
  • use strong passwords and
  • if possible, if they do not associate their phone number with sensitive internet accounts.
