ΝThe electronic SIM card enters the Greek market earlier than expected, with Cosmote being the first Greek network to support the new service. According to our information, the Greek company is expected to announce the launch of the service tomorrow, without being confirmed so far by official lips. A move that, if confirmed, comes much earlier than previous estimates that placed the launch of the service earlier in the first months of 2019.
The electronic SIM card (eSIM - embedded SIM) is gradually replacing the physical SIM card, which we use in our mobile phones from the beginning of mobile telephony until today. It is essentially a chip built into the device, to which the user does not have access, as is the case e.g. with NFC chip. This chip will store all the information of the user's program, as is the case so far on the physical SIM card.
According to our information, the activation of eSIM will be done by scanning the QR Code that the user will receive from the Cosmote store and after completing the process, according to the instructions that will appear on its screen, its profile will be integrated in eSIM of the device in his hands. A basic condition for the implementation of the process is its connection to the Internet (via WiFi network) so that the data of the program it has signed can be "downloaded" to its device.
According to our information, in the first phase the devices that will be supported by Cosmote eSIM will be the two LTE versions of the latest iPad Pro at 11 and 12,9 inches, as well as the Samsung Galaxy Watch. The little surprise is that in this first period Cosmote eSIM will not be supported by the new Apple smartphones, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, as a relative upgrade in the operating system of these devices is pending.
It is also worth noting that eSIM at this stage will not support the Twin SIM service, ie it will not be possible through the electronic SIM for the user to have the same number on two different devices. Something similar is expected for the dual SIM service, ie the service in which the user maintains two connections (different numbers) on one SIM card. Both twin SIM and dual SIM service are expected to be available at a later time from Cosmote's eSIM.
The launch of eSIM by Cosmote brings the Greek company among a small group of telecommunications providers around the world that support this service. According to relevant Apple page, mobile companies that support eSIM worldwide do not exceed 50.
