Android Q will warn you about applications you have not upgraded

ΣIt is usually in the interest of a developer to update their applications to support the latest features of the Android platform. Each new version of Android offers new APIs and features not offered by older versions of Android. However, each new version of Android also adds new limitations to what apps can do, which some app developers do not apply. For example, many applications avoided stating the API level that their application is intended to avoid, in order to avoid having to declare new runtime and runtime permissions. Google has finally begun to stop this behavior with new restrictions on apps that have been uploaded and updated in the Google Play Store, but also added a warning in Android Pie to warn apps that have not yet been updated by Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Modernize Android applications

Last December, Google introduced a new policy to update Android apps on the Google Play Store. Under the new policy, all new applications submitted to the Google Play Store from the 1st of August 2018 , applications must target API level 26 or higher (ie Android 8.0Oreo, Android 8.1Oreo or Android 9 Pie.) In addition, as of November 1, 2018, all updates to existing apps in the Play Store must also target API level 26 or higher. This policy will force both older and newer applications to comply with the new security, privacy, memory optimization, and battery saving features in the latest versions of Android. However, the new policy will not mean that applications will stop working on devices running older versions of Android, and developers will still be able to set their own minimum API level. On the other hand, the latest version of Android, Android 9 Pie, will encourage application developers to update their applications by warning users when running an application that it is so old that it may not work properly.

According this merger is activated  in AOSP, the ” PLATFORM_MIN_SUPPORTED_TARGET_SDK_VERSION”Increases to 23. This creation flag translates to system property. This property is used by the system when launching any application. The system checks the target SDK level of the application and if it is less than the specified value, then the user receives a warning message that the application may not work properly.ro.build.version.min_supported_target_sdkro.build.version.min_supported_target_sdk

At this time, it does not appear that Android Q will prevent users from running older Android applications. We imagine that there may be a small minority of users who will not be happy with such a restriction. There are many rarely updated applications used in specialized tasks for which there are no alternatives. The appearance of this warning every time a user launches an old application on Android Q may cause users to complain about updating or replacing the application to its creator.

If you want to see the API-target level of the applications that are installed on your device, you can use the application that we give you below.

Google has not fully decided whether to set the limit to SDK 23, and could choose something higher or lower.
