Activity trackers will soon be able to detect COVID-19!

The combination artificial intelligence and the data they record activity trackers gives us ways to detect those affected by Covid but still have no symptoms!

His pandemic Covid-19 continues and exists throughout the world, despite the fact that two and a half years have already passed since the first appearance of the virus. Even after the advent of vaccines, however, the virus continues and spreads while there is always a risk for vulnerable groups and the elderly. Disease detection continues and is essential, along with mask use and prophylaxis. The ideal would be to be able to know if one has contracted the virus, as quickly as possible. But this is not always possible, since the visible symptoms appear days after the initial attack, during which time the carrier transmits the virus without knowing it.

Now, however, technology may make it possible to detect infection with the virus long before the first visible symptoms appear and before the person himself realizes it. The technology developed by researchers combines an artificial intelligence system with one activity tracker or smartwatch, to detect him Covid-19 in all stages of its spread in the human body, from the initial stages of the attack to the final stages of recovery. The goal is for each of us to be able to know if we are infected and to isolate ourselves, avoiding contact with other people, early on.

The researchers wanted to see if there were changes in the measurements the trackers were taking, which could be used to develop an algorithm to detect Covid-19 before symptoms appear. To this end, they found 1163 volunteers, everyone under 51 years of age, who agreed to wear a certain bracelet (AVA Fertility Tracker) during sleep. The device records data every 10 seconds and requires at least 4 hours of continuous sleep, and after waking up it syncs the data with a smartphone. In fact, the volunteers used a suitable app to record any events that could have an effect on the data, such as alcohol, medications, or even narcotics, while they also had the ability to record possible symptoms of Covid-19. Also, all volunteers did regularly rapid tests, while those of them who had suspicious symptoms, had to do as well PCR-test. Finally, all the volunteers offered personal information such as age, sex, if they smoke, blood type, number of children, if they have been vaccinated, and if they have had contact with people positive for the virus.

The results of the study showed that the data recorded by the bracelet showed significant changes in all measurements, which were different during the incubation of the virus, the pre-symptomatic phase, the symptomatic phase, and also the recovery. On average, his symptoms Covid-19 they lasted 8,5 days. But the study was not about Covid itself, but the ability to predict the disease. For this reason, the researchers trained the artificial intelligence system using it 70% of recorded data, while they continued to record data from the volunteers. The system was able to detect it 73% of subsequent infections and in fact 2 days before the appearance of visible symptoms.

The researchers acknowledge that their results may not be replicable, as they are based on a relatively small sample of people, who were relatively young and therefore less likely to have severe symptoms than Covid-19, while all were of the same nationality and from the same region. Nevertheless, it is clear that the combination of the technology of w with artificial intelligence systems can have a huge impact on personalized medicine, and can detect diseases and viruses much more accurately than waiting for visible (or palpable) symptoms.

The future looks bright for this technology. It is now possible for everyone to have a device that records the user's vitals and has formed an accurate model of how their body works. Now researchers are proving that there is also the possibility of detecting minute fluctuations in the measurements of vital elements, and matching them to known (or unknown at the time) diseases and infections.

Artificial intelligence is expected to revolutionize prevention as well!
